Tenley E. Albright, MDTenley E. Albright, MD's interest in health sciences is based on her years of experience in surgical practice, medical education, and public advocacy. She has played a growing advisory role in the development of medical and health research and policy at the national level as well as at the university level.

Albright serves on the Board of Directors of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. She is on the board of State Street Bank and Trust Company and State Street Corporation and on its Audit Committee. On the board of West Pharmaceutical Services, a public company investigating new types of drug delivery, she has chaired the Technology Committee and served on the Audit Committee; and the Governance Committee and as Board Liaison to its Scientific Advisory Board.

Her faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School is Lecturer in the program of Surgery. There she has previously served as a Clinical Instructor in Surgery, as a member of the Admissions Committee, and a member of the Visiting Committee to the Board of Overseers of Harvard University and chaired the HMS Alumni Fund. Also at Harvard Medical School, Albright established with her brother the Hollis L. Albright MD '31 Annual Symposium, "What's New at HMS," which highlights new scientific initiatives at Harvard Medical School.

As chair and member of the National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine's Board of Regents, Albright developed a special interest in the potential for new technologies to advance medical education and training, surgery, and medical practice. During that time at NLM, 3-D imaging and virtual surgery were emerging as viable technologies, and the Visible Human Project was developed. She co-chaired the NLM's Health Information Infrastructure symposia, which highlighted telemedicine, distance learning, surgical tools, and remote monitoring. Currently, she is a consultant to the NLM Board of Regents; she serves on the Board subcommittee for Outreach and Communication, and chaired the Advisory Board for the national exhibit "Changing Face of Medicine: Women in Medicine." Earlier, she served on the initial advisory committee for the NIH Women's Health Initiative.

Albright is an honorary member of the surgical staff of the New England Baptist Hospital and has been a member of the corporation.

Previously, Albright was appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and the President as a delegate to the World Health Assembly for four years. She has also been involved in international polio eradication efforts. Albright has received the Research!America Advocacy Award for her work to advance medical and health research.

After attending Radcliffe College, Albright received her MD from Harvard Medical School; she has received eight honorary degrees.
