Research!America Welcomes New Board Members

Six new board members were elected at the Research!America annual meeting March 20.
Tenley E. Albright, MD
, is director of Collaborative Initiatives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an interdisciplinary "think and do" tank for complex societal problems. She has served on the board of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and as chair of the National Library of Medicine Board of Regents.
Harry Johns
is president and CEO of the Alzheimer's Association. He has launched initiatives to raise concern about Alzheimer's commensurate with its impact and to raise awareness of the association's role in care, support and research. Previously, Johns spent 22 years at the American Cancer Society.
Darrell G. Kirch, MD
, is president and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges. His career spans all aspects of academic medicine and includes leadership positions at medical schools, teaching hospitals and the National Institutes of Health. He is a leading expert on severe neuropsychiatric disorders.
Mark B. McClellan, MD, PhD ,
is a former Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator and former Food and Drug Administration commissioner. He is a visiting senior fellow at AEI-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies, a former member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers and former White House senior director for health care policy.
During The Honorable Louis Stokes' 30 years in Congress, he championed medical research to improve the lives of all Americans, particularly minorities. The Louis Stokes Laboratories Building on the NIH campus was dedicated in 2001. He is senior counsel at Squire, Sanders, and Dempsey L.L.P. and distinguished visiting professor at Case Western Reserve University.
Christopher A. Viehbacher
is president, U.S. Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline. Previously he was president, Pharmaceuticals Europe and held leadership positions at Burroughs Wellcome Inc., Canada and Glaxo Wellcome France. In 2003, the French Republic recognized him with its prestigious Légion d'Honneur award for his contributions to business and healthcare.
Karen A. Holbrook, PhD ,
president of The Ohio State University, was also formally elected to the board. She had served as an interim Research!America board member since May 2006.
