of American Medical Colleges reports that the member medical schools and
teaching hospitals in the state had a combined economic impact of $6 billion and a total employment impact of 40,300 in 2005.
In 2001, American University (AU)
had an economic impact of more than $600
million on the District of
Columbia. AU
also directly employed more than 7,100
people.
George Washington
University employed 8,300
workers and paid out more than $330
million in salaries and benefits during FY 2001.
