Highlights from local economic impact studies

In 2005, Maine's Office of Innovation reported that the state's R&D capacity included 7,000 R&D personnel and 400,000 square feet of R&D space valued at $442 million. Since 2003, Maine obtained $492 million of R&D funding from federal and private sources and also spun-off 13 new ventures. In 2005, 592 R&D companies employed about 6,300 people with a payroll over $310 million.

Maine's Office of Innovation also notes that the private R&D sector contributes $87 million to the state economy-a return on investment of 14:1.

The University of Maine System produces $8.10 of economic activity for every $1 invested by the state and has an annual economic impact of $1.5 billion. The system also supports 20,700 jobs and $616 million in personal income and benefits.

The Maine Biomedical Research Coalition reports that the state of Maine invested more than $42 million in biomedical research since 2000 and used this to leverage more than $275 million from federal and private sources. That amounts to a return of $6 for every $1 from the state.
