Highlights from local economic impact studies
The Association
of American Medical Colleges reports that the member medical schools and
teaching hospitals in the state had a combined economic impact of $11.5 billion and a total employment impact of 77,900 in 2005.
In FY 2000, the University
System of Maryland contributed $1.76
billion to the state's economic activity and supported 21,400 jobs earning a total of
$580 million.
In 2006, the Maryland
Technology Enterprise Institute of the University
of Maryland was involved in establishing 212 Maryland companies and creating 5,300 jobs. Since 1984, the
Institute has had a $13 billion economic
impact in the state.
Johns Hopkins University
supports more than 85,000 Maryland jobs and annually adds $7 billion in income to the Maryland
economy. The state invested $20
million in the Bunting-Blaustein
Cancer Research Building in 1999 and now the building expands cancer research by $23 million each year, supports 690 new Maryland
jobs, and generates $31 million in
spinoff income from other businesses in Maryland.
For every dollar the University of Maryland, Baltimore
received from the state in FY 2006, the University returned $16.54 in economic activity.
