Highlights from local economic impact studies
United for Medical Research's 2011 study, An Economic Engine, shows that in 2010, NIH invested $259,000,000 in Iowa, producing 5,337 new jobs.
According to the recent BioEnterprise Midwest Venture Healthcare report, in 2010$7,320,000 was invested in NewLinks Genetics Corporation, a biotechnology therapeutics corporation in Ames, IA.
The Association of American Medical Colleges reports that the member medical schools and teaching hospitals in the state had a combined economic impact of $4.1 billion and a total employment impact of 30,400 in 2005.
According to a report from BIO and Battelle, a portion of the Iowa Values Fund is going to support bioscience start-ups and expansions. Trans Ova Genetics, Integrated DNA Technologies, New Link Genetics, Inc., and Fort Dodge Animal Health were approved for a total of $23.5 million to create and/or retain about 1,900 jobs.
The Iowa Health Association reports that the health sector in Iowa supports 150,500 jobs and has a total economic impact of $5.3 billion.
