The Awards

The annual Research!America Advocacy Awards program was established in 1996 by the Board of Directors to honor outstanding advocates for medical, health and scientific research*. We recognize individuals and organizations whose leadership efforts have been notably effective in advancing our nation's commitment to research.  A list of our past Advocacy Award awardees is available here. The 2018 Research!America Advocacy Awards will be presented at a dinner on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, in Washington, DC. 

*For the purposes of these awards, the term medical, health and scientific research includes all of the following: basic, behavioral, biotech, clinical, global health, health services, prevention and public health, therapeutic, and translational research.

 

NOMINATION SUBMISSION PROCESS & REQUIREMENTS

The deadline for nominations for the 2018 awards is Friday, May 19, 2017.

Nominations will require:

1) Detailed accomplishments or achievements, examples of the nominee's advocacy activities, impact on research activities, or any other materials which show why the nominee is deserving of this award.

2) A link to the nominee's narrative biography (please, no CV's).

3) Contact information for the nominee, including: Name and degree(s), Title and Organization affiliation (if any), Mailing address, Phone number, Email, Secondary contact/support person's information (to facilitate logistics).

4) Contact information for the nominator including: Name and degree(s), Title and Organization affiliation (if any), Mailing address, Phone number, Email, Secondary contact/support person's information.

Research!America is seeking nominations for the following Awards: 

GEOFFREY BEENE BUILDERS OF SCIENCE AWARD

Benefactor: Geoffrey Beene Foundation; pictured at right, G. Thompson Hutton, Esq., and Mara Hutton

Eligible nominees for the award are distinguished medical, health, and scientific research administrators, scientists and other leaders who have demonstrated their commitment to advocacy for research by building an outstanding scientific research institution. Individuals who have substantially revitalized an existing institution are also eligible.

Gordon and Llura Gund Leadership Award

Eligible nominees are those individuals who have made a significant contribution to increasing the level of advocacy for medical or other health-related research in their communities or on a state or national level.

Isadore Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion

Isadore Rosenfeld, MDBenefactor: Rosenfeld Heart Foundation

Eligible nominees include reporters, editors and other media personnel, and citizens who have worked to effectively deliver medical or other health-related research advocacy messages to the public.

Eligible nominees include any organization or institution that is widely recognized as a strong advocate for medical or other health-related research in the U.S. or globally.

Raymond and Beverly Sackler Award for Sustained National Leadership

Eligible nominees are outstanding medical and health research leaders who have been instrumental in developing and implementing sustained advocacy for medical or other health-related research at the national level and/or globally.

NOMINATIONS are not accepted for the following:

Edwin C. Whitehead Award for Medical Research Advocacy

Nominees for The Edwin C. Whitehead Award for Medical Research (usually a Member of Congress) are not accepted by the Advocacy Awards Selection Committee, as those nominees are selected by the Research!America Board of Directors. Please do not nominate a sitting or past Member of Congress for an Advocacy Award.

Members of the Research!America Board of Directors are not eligible for nomination in any category. Emeritus Directors are eligible for nomination based upon the criteria outlined above. 

Selection Process

The Advocacy Awards Selection Committee will review all nominations. The Selection Committee consists of members of the Research!America Board of Directors and other outstanding advocates for research. While we encourage nominations to a specific award category, the Selection Committee reserves the right to determine the best category. At the discretion of the Selection Committee, some award categories may not be fulfilled in a given year.
