Statement by Research!America Chair The Honorable Mike Castle on the March for Science

Thursday, April 20, 2017

The March for Science on April 22 is a celebration of the far-reaching impact of scientific progress on the health and well-being of individuals worldwide. As the first of its kind global grassroots movement driven by the scientific community to raise awareness of science’s role in society, we are pleased to be a partner for this event, encouraging scientists and those who care about science to participate. Science is the answer to combatting disease, eliminating pandemics, ensuring clean air and water, protecting our natural resources and launching new technologies. And a majority of Americans (67%) agree that public policies should be based on the best available science, according to a survey commissioned by Research!America.

Medical research and innovation has strong congressional bipartisan support which is a very positive sign for our research ecosystem.  We strongly believe the March will further motivate scientists to engage with the public and policymakers in the weeks and months ahead to help elevate science as a national priority. Science affects us all, and we must do our part to ensure research supported by the public and private sector advances at the level of scientific opportunity.
