The National Science Foundation (NSF) has collaborated with NBC Learn and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to create six new videos for the “Science of Innovation” series. The videos highlight how innovation resulting from science and engineering ideas can benefit society and the economy. From 3-D bioprinting that could one day allow researchers to print heart tissue to a new technology that could improve the strength of metal for use in the automotive and aircraft industries, the videos feature the work of trailblazers in their fields. The main objective is to inspire youth and encourage them to pursue an education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). "NSF's investments in basic research have led to surprising and powerful innovations, and contribute to many technologies that are part of our daily lives," said Pramod Khargonekar, NSF assistant director for engineering. "Understanding how engineering and science research leads to beneficial impacts on our lives, as these videos with NBC Learn and USTPO show, is key to creating a better world where people and technology can realize their full potential."
