Statement from Mary Woolley, Research!America president

WASHINGTON—April 2, 2007—"Research!America joins the American Public Health Association in celebration of the 12th annual National Public Health Week. This year's efforts encourage Americans to prepare effectively for public health threats, from bioterrorism and natural disasters to disease outbreaks.

"Promoting advocacy for public health, from research through delivery of service, and building advocates within the public health community are critical elements of Research!America's ongoing outreach.

"The contribution of research, which provides the foundation for effective public health services, cannot be underestimated. Prevention and public health research are especially critical in preparing for the types of public health threats that are the focus of this week.

"Americans know how important public health is to their communities. In a 2006 poll commissioned by Research!America, 79% of Americans said they support increased federal funding for state and local health departments."

About Research!America
