Isadore Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion
WASHINGTON-March 8, 2011-Acclaimed broadcast journalist Charlie Rose will receive Research!America's 2011 Isadore Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion. The award recognizes his commitment to bringing greater public attention to, and promoting public interest in, science and medical research through his in-depth coverage of research-related issues and his conversations with some of the most influential scientists of our time.
Rose will be honored March 15, 2011, at the 15th Annual Research!America Advocacy Awards event at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC.
Rose is the host of "Charlie Rose," the nightly one-hour program that engages America's top scientists, politicians, business leaders and other newsmakers in one-on-one conversations and roundtable discussions. These interviews have made Rose a leading cultural and intellectual conduit about medical and health research, providing accessible profiles of the people who have influenced research and related policy. They include conversations with Francis Collins, MD, PhD, about the human genome; with James Watson, PhD, about DNA; and with Senator Orrin Hatch about stem cell research. "Charlie Rose" appears on PBS and Bloomberg Television. Rose is also a contributing correspondent to the CBS News program "60 Minutes."
In 2006, Rose launched the Charlie Rose Science Series. This year-long, 13-part series explored advances in scientific research and how these discoveries could improve human health and have a lasting impact on society. Among the subjects were emerging threats to global health; research on the brain; longevity and the body's aging mechanisms; stem cell research; obesity in America; HIV/AIDS worldwide; cardiovascular disease; and sexual health.
In 2009, Rose launched another year-long series focused on science: the Charlie Rose Brain Series. Rose and his co-host, Nobel Prize-winning psychiatrist and neuroscientist Eric Kandel, PhD, interviewed leading scientists and researchers. Each monthly episode examined different subjects, including perception, social interaction, aging and creativity.
Rose is a frequent speaker and moderator on a variety of subjects, including health and research, at forums around the world. He has received numerous journalistic awards and honorary degrees, including an Emmy® Award in 1987. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, and a recipient of the Legion d'Honneur from France in September 2010.
Award benefactor Isadore Rosenfeld, MD, of Weill Cornell Medical College, is widely recognized as one of the country's preeminent physicians. He is the best-selling author of numerous health-related books, a nationally recognized health news commentator and a Research!America emeritus director.
Other 2011 Research!America Advocacy Award winners are Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC); New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin (D-IL); inventor and physicist Dean Kamen and Nobel laureate J. Michael Bishop, MD.
