Research!America Announces Call for Bipartisan Candidate Engagement Proposals

Research!America, in partnership with the National Science Policy Network, has announced a request for proposals from student- and postdoc-led science policy groups for the alliance’s bipartisan candidate engagement initiative for the 2018 midterm elections.

The initiative will support student science policy groups interested in increasing their level of civic engagement and outreach to candidates running for national office to elevate the importance of scientific research during the midterm elections. Highly competitive proposals would be innovative, engage a diverse group of young scientists, and collaborate with other science policy groups for activities such as lab tours or roundtable discussions with candidates, community science events, social media engagement, media outreach and webinars.

Applicants can apply for $1,000 to $3,000 in grants with the potential for up to $5,000 for high-impact proposals. Proposals are due by Friday, August 10, 2018 and should be submitted to info@researchamerica.org in PDF format. Research!America leadership and staff will review proposals and those selected for funding will be announced in late August. A word document of the proposal can be found here.

A survey of U.S. adults commissioned by Research!America shows that a strong majority of Americans (86%) say it is important for scientists to inform the public about their research and its impact on society. And respondents agree that scientists should play a role in shaping public policy in not only medical and health research, but in education, national defense, infrastructure, job creation and other areas. In the same survey, 68% of respondents say it is important that candidates for Congress have a science advisor.

The bipartisan candidate engagement is part of the National Science Policy Network’s microgrant program which is supporting projects led by early career scientists who are advocating for science policy and diplomacy.
