Public Health Thank You Day, November 23, 2020

On November 23, 2020, join Research!America in honoring those who work in public health for their steadfast commitment to keeping our families and communities safe and healthy. Every Monday before Thanksgiving, Research!America and our allies in the research and scientific community express gratitude to the public health workforce who go above and beyond – often behind the scenes – to protect Americans and our communities from injury and illness, as well as to encourage better health. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown in the most vivid terms how important this workforce is to our nation’s well-being.

“Improving the public’s health is not an impossible quest, it requires a 24 hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, commitment to safer, healthier, and stronger communities. It is about people who devote their knowledge, time, and talent to health promotion, disease prevention, and ensuring access to care. They do this with the goal of achieving health equity and the best possible health for all. To the public health workforce: thank you not only for what you do, but for the passion, empathy, and inclusiveness you bring to this effort, especially during the SARS-Cov-2 Pandemic.” said Georges Benjamin, MD, executive director of the American Public Health Association (APHA).

The bipartisan co-chairs of the Congressional Public Health Caucus, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Mike Simpson (R-ID), and Rob Wittman (R-VA) introduced a Public Health Thank You Day resolution that commends individuals in the public health workforce for their dedication and service.

The public health workforce includes, but is not limited to:

  • Community Health Workers
  • Contact Tracers
  • Epidemiologists
  • Health Educators
  • Health Inspectors
  • Nutritionists
  • Scientists and Lab Technicians
  • Toxicologists

“Research!America salutes all those who work in public health, devoting their expertise to improving the health and safety of Americans. Especially in 2020 with COVID-19 front and center in our lives, Public Health Thank You Day is an opportunity to thank the people who protect us from disease threats, help save lives during natural disasters, and encourage the health and prosperity of communities across the country,” said Mary Woolley, president & CEO of Research!America.
