Wednesday, October 3, 2018

Research!America applauds the 2018 Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry for their research evolving new enzymes and antibodies for use in the development of therapies to fight cancer and other diseases–Dr. Frances Arnold of the California Institute of Technology, Dr. George Smith of the University of Missouri-Columbia and Sir Gregory Winter of the University of Cambridge, U.K.  Drs. Arnold and Smith, whose research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, are being recognized for producing new enzymes that are used to manufacture things such as renewable fuels and pharmaceuticals.  Dr. Smith and Sir Winter are known for their work in phage display in which a virus that infects bacteria can be used to evolve new proteins.  The technology has advanced medical treatment for various diseases including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and macular degeneration. The Nobel announcements convey the importance of sustained federal investments in basic research to unleash discoveries that can have a profound impact on the treatment of deadly and disabling diseases.
