Statement by Research!America president and CEO Mary Woolley on President Trump’s FY17 Budget Proposal

Tuesday, March 28, 2017

This budget request contradicts several of the fundamental goals the president has established for our nation. Locking in substandard staffing levels at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), cutting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants, and gutting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) prevention funding is a fast-track to failure against the goal of ending deadly and debilitating diseases. Cutting National Science Foundation (NSF) grants is a strategy for starving American innovation, not fueling it.  And cutting more dollars from the grossly underfunded Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) squanders our best hope of bending the healthcare cost curve, a necessary step for sustained fiscal stability.  We respect the Administration’s desire to ensure every tax dollar is used strategically, but hamstringing federal agencies that have proven their value to the American people over and over again is not strategic and will not achieve our nation’s goals for health, prosperity and security.
