Statement by Research!America President and CEO Mary Woolley on Senate Passage of Labor-HHS Appropriations Bill
Research!America applauds the Senate passage of the FY19 Labor, Health and Human Services bill which provides a $2 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The significance cannot be overstated. During a time of extraordinary opportunities to advance critical research to combat deadly and disabling diseases, congressional leaders demonstrated their commitment to the NIH with robust funding increases. We are grateful for the leadership of the House and Senate “Labor-H” Appropriations Subcommittees, Chairmen Tom Cole (R-OK) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), and Ranking Members Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Patty Murray (D-WA), and Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Vice Chair Patrick Leahy (D-VT), for putting research to improve health at the forefront of our nation’s priorities. We urge both Houses of Congress to approve, and the President to sign, final legislation that includes $2 billion for NIH before the end of fiscal year 2018.
