The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center dates back to 1834 with the founding of the Willoughby Medical University of Lake Erie in Willoughby, Ohio. The Willoughby school moved to Columbus in 1846 to expand and improve its clinical facilities by becoming Starling Medical College. After a series of mergers, in 1914, all of its assets were donated to The Ohio State University.
As an academic health center, research has always influenced our growth and development. In the 1930s and 1940s, medical research began to flourish as Ohio State advanced the use of radiation as a cancer treatment, was the first central Ohio hospital to use penicillin to fight infection, and created a two-year medical degree program in response to increased demand for physicians during World War II.
Today, the Health Science enterprise at Ohio State includes seven health science colleges—Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Optometry, Public Health, and Veterinary Medicine—as well as the $4 billion Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, which includes seven hospitals, more than 20 research institutes, multiple ambulatory sites, an accountable care organization, and a health plan, all focused on the future of health care.
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has a bold aspiration to revolutionize health and well-being by transforming the health system to an integrated health platform and creating a new model for academic health care.
The foundation for our transformation is outlined in our ambition, mission and vision. These serve as a guide for the many ways The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is leading the way:
- Ambition: We will become a leading academic health center by driving breakthrough health care solutions to improve people’s lives.
- Mission: We will improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care.
- Vision: We will push the boundaries of discovery and knowledge, solve significant health problems and deliver unparalleled care.
With significant focus on pioneering life-altering biomedical discoveries and their translation into breakthrough health care solutions, research is foundational to Ohio State and our academic health care mission. Through research, we are changing patient care and taking care breakthroughs to the patient bedside and to the community. Our research efforts are focused on:
- Biomedical Innovation
- Extramural Funding
