Statement by Research!America President & CEO Mary Woolley on the House of Representatives 2nd Minibus Package

Friday, July 31, 2020

Research!America appreciates the progress the House of Representatives has made toward timely completion of FY21 appropriations by passing a second “minibus” bill that proposes new funding levels for such key research and public health agencies as NIH, CDC, NSF, and AHRQ. We hope the House process sets the stage for bipartisan, bicameral agreement on final appropriations legislation that jettisons out-of-date and out-of-sync pre-pandemic budget caps and is signed into law before the end of FY20.

“COVID-19 is showing just how high the price of stagnation is. Our nation’s health agencies — NIH, CDC, AHRQ, NSF, FDA, VA, and others — will thrive with robust, uninterrupted, research funding to combat this pandemic, future pandemics, and the innumerable, yet certainly beatable, diseases that afflict millions of Americans,” said Mary Woolley.

We encourage the House and Senate to work together in a bipartisan manner to complete FY21 appropriations on a timely basis as a pandemic response and preparedness priority.
