UNEVEN GROWTH IN U.S. MEDICAL AND HEALTH R&D INVESTMENTS ACROSS SECTORS
A new report from Research!America shows total U.S. investment in medical and health R&D grew by 35.7% from 2013 to 2018, led by industry and the federal government. Academic and other research institutions ramped up their R&D investment substantially over the five-year period, increasing their spending by 38.7%, while state and local governments increased investments by 23.9%. Despite overall investment growth, medical and health R&D continues to account for just five percent of the total $3.6 trillion in U.S. health spending.
