Gen Z Skips the Biotech Arms Race

In the global race to dominate science and technology research, Gen Z Americans aren’t taking a side: In fact, global dominance doesn’t matter, they say.
A recent survey of 802 people ages 18 to 24 suggests that Gen Z is proscience, with 91 percent of respondents saying they supported federally funded scientific research. But the rationale behind that support appears different than their parents’ or grandparents’ motivations.
When asked to rank eight reasons for supporting science, Gen Z respondents ranked discovering medical breakthroughs, advancing human knowledge and protecting the environment as the most compelling reasons for supporting science.
Respondents ranked the message “science promotes American leadership in the world” last, with only 17 percent reporting they found it “very convincing.”
The survey was conducted in July by the research advocacy group Research!America.
