This afternoon, the Senate voted 56-40 in favor to confirm Arati Prabhakar, PhD, to serve as Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). With her confirmation, she will also become the President’s Science Advisor and a member of the President’s Cabinet. With the recent passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, having a strong and innovative leader in these roles is critical to coordinate implementation of the law among federal agencies.
“We are grateful to the Senate for moving quickly to confirm Dr. Prabhakar as OSTP Director on a bipartisan basis. As we’ve witnessed so clearly in recent years, scientific discovery and innovation are at the forefront of addressing major societal challenges such as pandemic preparedness and of mitigating the impacts of climate change. In her new role, Dr. Prabakhar has an unparalleled opportunity to support S&T innovation to bolster our nation’s global competitiveness,” said Mary Woolley, president and CEO of Research!America.
“We believe Dr. Prabhakar will work effectively across the federal government to help ensure science, technology, and innovation can continue to drive economic growth, create good jobs, and address urgent threats to our health and well-being. The American science enterprise and the American public will be well-served by her leadership.”
