The EDWIN C. WHITEHEAD AWARD FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH ADVOCACY  recognizes exemplary leaders, particularly those in public office, who have shown a long-standing commitment to advancing health research as a national priority and who galvanize others in support of science policy and funding.

The Honorable Charles E. Schumer has represented the state of New York, first as a congressman and then as a senator, for over four decades. The Senator has held respected leadership positions as the Senate Minority and Majority leader and has sat on the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration since 2020. During his tenure in Congress, Leader Schumer has contributed in extraordinarily important ways to advancing health research, science, and technology writ large, including the fierce determination he displayed in securing bipartisan passage of the landmark CHIPS and Science Act; and the profoundly important role he continues to play in steering our nation through the COVID-19 crisis.
