In an Infection Control Today article about President Obama’s request for more than $1.8 billion in emergency funds to respond to the Zika Virus, Research!America board member, Georges Benjamin, M.D., executive director of American Public Health Association (APHA) backed calls for additional resources. “New threats require new investments. The president’s request is a prudent step to help ensure we are as prepared as possible to detect and defend against this emerging health risk.”
Research!America board member, Victor Dzau, M.D., president of the National Academy of Medicine, was quoted in a McClatchy news article underscoring the implications of the Zika virus to the economy and international travel. “It’s more than just health. Following the release of President Obama’s FY17 budget proposal, Research!America’s Ellie Dehoney, vice president of policy and advocacy, stressed the importance of a growing base budget for research at federal health and science agencies in a POLITICO Pro article. “Mandatory funding is "great,"…but it's not as important as your annual increases to your discretionary budget to build up your foundation."
